There are 2 types of search engine on the Internet. The first type just searches using one engine, the second type searches a lot of engines and combines the results for you. This usually gives you better results, but takes longer.
Internet Search Engines (Single Engine Type):
Internet Search Engines (Multiple Engines)
HKPU ELC has a special page that finds examples of how words and phrases are used. Click here to go to this page, and enter the word or phrase into the Web Concordancer in the middle of the page.
You can use the Internet to find out how to use words and phrases in sentences with the correct grammar. Use the multiple search engines above and search for the word or phrase you want to use. The search engine will give you a list of documents containing that word or phrase. Google News is especially good for this because news stories are edited to make sure that the grammar and spelling are correct. Type the word or phrase you are looking for into the search box at the top of the Google News page. If you are searching for a phrase, put inverted commas (speech marks - "") around it.
Then, to find a word on a page, click the 'Edit' menu at the top of the browser screen, then click 'Find'. Type the word you are looking for into the box, and the program will search the page for the phrase or sentence you want. Then you can see how it is used. Don't rely on just one page because there may be a mistake. Try to look for at least 3 examples.
