Traveling by MTR, I believe, to many men and women, is a complete nightmare. Whenever I get into a (as always) crowded compartment, I find that I am at war since there are always so many men around and I am worried that I may be assaulted.
As a result, I become exhausted every time I take the MTR. The situation is 100,000 times worse during peak hours.
As a female in my mid-twenties, I have been indecently assaulted by male passengers many times, mainly on the long escalator in Wan Chai and at the exit and escalator in Lam Tin. There is no way you can avoid those thugs since they always attack from behind.
I called the MTR in January, urging them to set up female-only compartments immediately, since summer is approaching and it gets more dangerous as we will wear thinner layers of clothes.
I was told the MTR will set up such compartments, but the woman (who would not give her title) did not set a concrete timeline regarding this.
But when I called the MTR for updates yesterday, a customer service liaison officer replied that there is no such plan to set up the compartments. He also apologized for any misunderstanding. I did not misunderstand. I am enraged that the MTR has gone back on its word.
The MTR is out of touch with the real world.
